Student Success Librarian

BASIC FUNCTION:

The Student Success Librarian will work closely with librarians, faculty, and University partners to design and implement innovative library services that support student success, recruitment, and retention with an emphasis on those in their first two years of college and first-generation students.  In collaboration with other library staff, this librarian will provide leadership for library assessment initiatives to design, develop, and deploy assessment tools.

SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:

Responsible for orienting and training others and assigning and reviewing their work.  May be responsible for acting as a team leader for other positions that perform essentially the same work, or related technical tasks, but report to a higher level on a formal basis.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Internal contacts include other research librarians, administrators, faculty, students and staff.  External contacts include vendors, consultants, visiting scholars, and the general public.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Collaborate with faculty and assist with the planning, development, and implementation of instruction and participate in the assessment of student learning in first- and second-year courses.
  • Provide proactive information literacy services which incorporates emerging information technologies, assist with the development of online tutorials, subject guides, and other electronic instructional materials, focusing on building library research skills and engaging students with the tools of scholarship.
  • Coordinate assessment of library student success initiatives and participate in assessment of university-wide initiatives.
  • Administer usability testing, questionnaires, focus groups, and other assessment methodologies, as appropriate, in order to strengthen or redesign existing library services, collections, and spaces.
  • Collaborate with subject librarians to develop and offer customized instruction (e.g. Graduate Students workshops on Refworks, copyright, etc.) in multiple formats.
  • Serve as a subject librarian to develop and maintain the physical and virtual collections needed by assigned department.  Assess collection gaps and budget needs.
  • Maintains statistics and prepare reports in areas of responsibility.
  • Serve on the reference desk and contribute to reference via chat and email.
  • Participate in professional and scholarly activities, including attending conferences, contributing to the literature, or serving on committees.
  • Contribute to the cultural and outreach programs presented by the assigned departments and affiliated agencies.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

  • User-centered service philosophy and enthusiasm for the educational role of libraries.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with information technologies and electronic resources; a high degree of computer literacy.

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team with faculty, staff and a growing culturally diverse campus population.
  • Effective teaching skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for working with a diverse clientele.
  • Ability to work successfully in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

ALA accredited MLS or comparable master's degree, and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in an academic or research setting.
