CD Charts

Bob Austin's advise on CD Charts is (sorry Bob) is incomplete. I called
Softcharts about their "loop" set after drilling down in their website for the
details of which charts were included. This is the same set offered on the
"Captain" as a "loop" set. There is one big flaw- THERE ARE NO CANADA CHARTS!.
I called the company to confirm what I was seeing and they confirmed it- no
Canada charts. If you plan to do the loop and are going into Canada (via
Montreal & Rideau & Trent Severn Waterways) you will need to get electronic
charts somewhere else other than the Softchart set. Below are the link to the
Softchart website that list the charts in the set.

There is a way to get the latest NOAA set (all 2000+ charts) and a set of
Canadian charts. Go to ebay. There are two guys selling chart CDs and also a
Navigation program (Seaclear II). One has the complete NOAA set ($50+
shipping), the other sells Inland waterways and Canada (prices are around
$25/area). Load them onto your laptop, plug in a USB GPS receiver (website of
company that sells them
-http://www.deluoelectronics.com/customer/home.php?cat=1) and start planning.

The information is a little old, but when we did the Loop in 2002, 03
and 04 we used the following for Canadian waters:  At that time NDI had
an exclusive for digital elecronic charts for Canada - I do not think
that they are exclusive any more.

NDI Digital Electronic Charts for Canadian Waters

NDI has a one year agreement on sale of discs - will

not support (give
a new password) any disc before 2002.  Trade-in of
old discs for new ones
available at 1/2 price at Maptech dealers.

Blue Water Charts & Guidebooks: <ww.bluewaterweb.com>
                Landfall Navigation <www.landfallnavigation.com>
                Canadian NDI <www.digitalocean.ca> or 1-800-563-0634

I live in Florida and intend to take my boat up to
Lake Pickwick and spend the summer cruising the
Tennessee Rivers.  I wonder when the best time to take
the boat upstream from Mobile would be.  My guess at
this time is that late May would be good as it would
not yet be too hot and hopefully the spring runoff
will be mostly over.  Any words of advice would be
appreciated.

Thanks to all who provided advice.  There were
numerous on and off list responses.  When searching
the archives, I found a good thread "North on the
Tombigbee"  in the March 2005 archives.  Anyone with
plans simular to mine should check out this thread as
well.
