< Does anyone have any suggestion as to the best way to clean up these
oil spots without doing further damage? >

The yacht crews use aerosol dry cleaning fluid.  Spray on, let dry to powder,
wipe or vacuum.  Helped service all the winches on a Swan 77, inadvertently
getting grease and gear oil on the teak decks, cleaned right up with dry
cleaning fluid after removing excess with oilsorb pads.
