Email portability

In October, I asked for and received help about how to send email from
OutLook while using my wifi card equipped laptop at various locations on our
little run up the rivers.  Severla folks asked me to relate the eventual
solution.

The upshot was that where the server allowed it, I could send BellSouth
account emails using OutLook, and where the server did not allow it, I just
had to use the internet access to BellSouth's website to send email.  I was
always able to receive BellSouth email on my OutLook.  Replying via the
BellSouth website was not so great because the copy was not maintained
there, and I had to copy stuff back to the website to respond.  I could have
set the OutLook to leave a copy on the website, but for various reasons, I
did not.

Two big problems with the BellSouth website, which I rarely ever use for
email (meaning the contact list there was out of date), were the inability
to import contacts from OutLook and to create address groups.  I took a good
suggestion and started a gmail account where the website looks a lot like
BellSouth's but gives you the ability to import addresses and to create
address groups.

Since that time, I have been working at getting better mobile connectivity
starting with dumping Nextel (contract ended in November) and getting
Verizon phones.  We had a borrowed Verizon cell phone on our trip and were
impressed with the connectivity - not perfect, but much better than Nextel.

The next thing that happened was that our area got the broadband Verizon
service this month, and I can now use a National Access card at home for
good connectivity.  Then started the "big email trial" where I tested the
ability to send and receive email to/from all three of my email accounts.
Again gmail came through with an automatic configuration application for
my OutLook 2000, and I can now use OutLook hooked up to the Verizon card to
send and receive email on the gmail account.  I already knew that the
work-related email server would not allow me to send email remotely from
that account, but I can receive it fine and reply via gmail.

Again, the BellSouth email account was problematic in that it would not
allow me to send email from OutLook while hooked up to the Verizon card.
I contacted both Verizon and BellSouth help people who pointed their fingers
at each other (wish I could conference call them).  No combination of
settings would allow the BellSouth email to exit the computer via OutLook
when connected through Verizon.  Go figure.  i am always willing to try
suggested solutions, if anybody has them, but I have followed the online and
phoned directions from Bellsouth to no avail.

The BellSouth question may well be moot, since I am considering dumping
their DSL service and getting a router to plug the Verizon card into
for Internet connection of the desktop computer.  The only thing not
resolved with the admiral is the lack of internet on the home desktop
computer when I am gone with the laptop and Verizon card.  I could always
leave the Verizon card and limp around with the wifi card if I am going to
be in places where that service is available - like hotels.  Since I am
quitting work in two weeks, I can assume that she will probably be with me
any time I am off with the laptop, making the decision to dump the DSL (and
reluctant BellSouth email account along with it) a bit closer to happening.
Who knows?  Maybe we'll dump the land line completely some day.

Try setting the outgoing (SMTP) server to port 587.
This is at tools, accounts (your mail server), properties, advanced. I had
the same problem and this fixed it. Don't ask for the explanation, I've
forgotten. Has something to do with spammers and they way they use computers
to forward junk mail.
