AA batteries should be the lithium ones as they store without degrading.

Per recent developments, the once popular Nalgene water bottles should not
be used. I'm unsure what to use as a replacement.

Ron mentions "per recent developments, the once popular Nalgene water bottles should not be used", and I suspect he is referring to BPA. We have been using & re-using these bottles for years now, for both hot & cold beverages. However my wife heard about the BPA problem which is in plastics with the #7 (like Nalgene) in the recycling triangle and now she doesn't want to use them.

Anyone have a better choice for this type of bottle?

Anyone have a better choice for this type of bottle?

Absolutely.  Use one of the stainless steel water bottles.  There are a
couple of manufacturers.  We use "Klean Kanteen" products:
http://www.kleankanteen.com/

They're obviously more expensive than plastic bottles but they last forever
and don't have any of the health issues associated with plastics -
especially when exposed to sun (like on a boat).
