Hi all, A few weeks ago we had 2 male and 2 female orioles regularly visiting the sugar water feeders (both theirs and the hummingbirds') and oranges. As of about a week ago they stopped coming to the feeders although I still occasionally hear a male in the yard. I presume it's due to them feeding young and therefore concentrating on insects, but does anyone else experience this? Rob Ballinger - Clinton

From Robert Dixon 6/4/20My observations from years of feeding Orioles in Connecticut were that oranges were great until they started nesting. I'm so glad you asked this, since I was experiencing and wondering exactly the same thing. Now I feel relieved that this is normal and not that there has been some awful tragedy! It is my first spring with orioles and has been delightful. Same experience here except they sniffed the oranges but did not eat them (3 weeks or so ago) - maybe some oranges differ in appeal?  Also my hummingbirds have vanished which normally nest here. I can hear the orioles, scarlet tanagers and rose breasted grosbeaks, but they stay hidden and haven't come to my oranges for the past week. The red-bellied woodpecker, however, is loving having them all to him/herself. The bluejay took a bite, but was not impressed. So, I don't need to put out as many, but I am still putting them out.
