Oil Spill impact

I have not seen anybody mention that Mobile Bay may soon be impacted by the
looming oil spill off Dauphin Island.  It is hard to imagine that sections
of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway may not be closed in the near future to
prevent spread of the oil farther inland.

Rich:

While I haven't seen any posts about the Mobile Bay area and
eastward, I did just leave Panama City Beach (Bay Point Marina) this
morning (by car).  We visited with Roy and Elvie on "Roy El'," who
told us that the folks they have talked to are very much concerned
about the spill.

Dog River Marina and Eastern Shore Marine are reported as sending all
boats they can't put on the hard up to Demopolis or Columbus.  Most
Loopers in the area are planning to scramble as soon as they can.

I say "as soon as they can," because a pretty strong storm is rolling
through the area over the next couple of days and will make things
nasty until Tuesday or Wednesday, when many plan to run up the rivers
from Mobile until this mess is resolved.

The above is second hand, so maybe some of the affected folks will chime in.

One big concern, other than just getting oil on your boat, is some
boats could suck the oil into their intakes -- air conditioning, raw
water cooling, refrigeration, etc.  If that happens, it is big
trouble.  Most trawlers, if traveling slowly in calm water, are not
likely to have the problem.  However, in rough water, a go-fast might
run some risk.  If I had a small go-fast, I would park it and just
plan to clean the hull when it all goes away (whenever that is).

For the first time in my memory, I am thinking, "I'm glad I don't
have a boat in the Gulf right now."
