David,

I can understand the "itchy finger" syndrome - I can hardly wait myself.  And
I know that there is a lot of money at stake to the ships that can start the
season early but where has the seamanship gone?  Isn't this the same as a
pleasure craft waiting in Miami for Bimini because there has been a north wind
blowing for two or three days?  I'm amazed at the calibre of the commanders on
these vessels.  Read the weather reports!!!

I'm waiting in Beaverton to be launched because the westerly winds have filled
the marina with ice!  It's a no brainer!  Of course, my livelyhood doesn't
rely on me being launched - but that shouldn't be a factor in a decision to
"put to sea" in impossible conditions, knowing that the Coast Guard or an ice
breaker will come to your rescue.

There was a program on TV that I saw recently about a vessel that left the
west end of Superior (not sure whether it was Duluth or Thunder Bay) too early
and all the damage the commander did to his vessel because of the ice.  It
really knocked a hole in the company's first paycheck that season - because he
left too early.  Worth thinking about.

The people in Florida probably won't understand this email - the ice is the
same stuff as you have in your drinks - but a lot thicker!!  Sorry for using
up your cell phone time.

Jim - looking at April 15th (maybe)
