Richard McCall's valid question re what damage the oil gunk might do to
your boat was well covered in Ron Rogers excellent reply today citing his
understanding of the fishing boats and other 'rescue boats' out there working
in the center of all the mess. Most are dry stack boats which don't suck in
water to cool anything. They also are powerwashed before coming through a
series of booms. Ron's information is a valuable contribution and
NON-POLITICAL. Another listee has been permitted once again to rant his
admittedly biased opinions which do nothing at all to either 'save the planet'
nor to be helpful to boaters.
Earlier, Bob Austin described the booms he
made from 'swim worms' to protect his boat in Pensacola. Many of us living
down here are reporting (though I am not allowed to report since this is NOT
BOATING RELATED according to our 'wise monitor'...) their findings. I DO
report daily on Claiborne's website and Ted's WaterWays site as well as on the
Great Loop list. Other than around the marsh areas south of New Orleans, the
ICW itself has not been affected...yet...and all the Al and FL beaches are
beautiful and clean.
My advice, for what it's worth, is if it looks like
it's coming this way, take your boat out of harm's way...up the Tenn-Tom or
wherever, or HAUL her!!!
Obviously this situation, if it worssens, will spell
bad news for those hoping to do the LOOP this year! For NOW, you're OK, just
keep watching! A hurricane or any severe storm will wreck havoc and the
hurricane season is now upon us. The hurricane prediction center out in
Colorado (?) is, as usual, predicting the worst scenario...as it did last
year.
