Delorme has recently introduced a piece of software for their devices ....
Even better, It lets me SELECT which port numbers to use - really
simplifying tieing the GPS and Nobeltec together........
I don't know if this will work with any of the other USB devices but many
use the same chipsets........
I would be interested in hearing if it is compatable with any of the other
USB GPSs.....

I've been told the earlier versions of Nobletec (mine) won't take a USB
input
and that the USB-Serial converters won't work either. I guess this might do
it if
one is savvy enough to get it set up??? I'd sure like to know if it is
compatible with the
aforementioned USB receiver also.

Nobeltec has their own line of USB to serial converters:

I downloaded the DeLormes USB to serial port driver (converter) which works
great with my USB only laptop and Nobeltec. It is free.

These adapters are not Nobletec proprietary.  They are made by Sealevel
Systems, Inc. in Liberty, SC.  Try www.sealevel.com for more info and maybe
a better price.  I spoke with one of their tech people the other day.  They
are quite helpful.

Dave, USB is a hardware matter, not a software (Nobeltec) issue.  If the PC
you're using accepts USB input, it will work fine with Nobeltec.  I've used
Nobeltec VNS versions 6, 7 and 9 with an HP laptop that has multiple USB
ports, using a Serial-to-USB adapter (discussed in the Archives) with great
success for several years.  Whoever told you "earlier versions of Nobeltec
won't take a USB input", doesn't know what they're talking about, not
unusual on this list.  The whole point is that neither Nobeltec nor any
other applications knows where the GPS data is coming from, whether it's
through a USB-to-serial adapter, or not.  The hardware does, but not the
software.

Odds are it'll work fine.  And I'm not all that convinced that a utility
that permits you to assign port numbers to various USB ports will be all
that helpful, unless you know how to inspect your Device Manager and
determine what port numbers are already in use on that system.  Otherwise
many in here would pick a port number already used by their mouse or modem
or some other device and really foul things up.  By a decent USB-to-Serial
adapter from a reputable dealer and Nobeltec will be quite happy running
through it.

They do, and at $700 for the 8-port version they are way overpriced. I got a
Qatec 8 port unit, $369 and it works flawlessly with my Nobeltec. One great
advantage of so many ports is that you don't have to futz around hardwiring
various devices. You can just run them all into the Qatec and then use the
NMEA repeater software in Nobeltec to send the desired data out the desired
port (e.g. route the compass and GPS data to the autopilot, route the GSP
data to the external radar, etc.)
