An Updated Long And Skinny Post About Acronyms

As threatened, here is the updated list of acronyms that may be found on
TWL. As before, I recommend you to the following site for typical Internet
acronyms:

This page lists hundreds of Internet acronyms ranging from the common ones
like 'FWIW', 'IMHO', & 'OTOH' to some that are so obscure that I doubt that
they've been used more than once or twice ever.

What follows are some of the more boating specific acronyms that you may
find on the list. Thanks to those who provided me with additions and
corrections to my earlier post.

If you sent me something and it isn't here this may be the reason: If there
was some doubt about a given term I ran a Google search of the TWL Archive.
If the term didn't show up in the search I didn't include it here.

API = American Petroleum Institute; Sets standards for (among other things)
motor oil service levels.

BU = Boat Unit; $1,000.00

CHB = Chein Hwa Boat or Chung Hwa Boat; A Taiwanese boatyard that built a
line of trawlers designed (mostly) by Ed Monk.

F/V = Fishing Vessel

GB = Grand Banks

GC = Golf Cart; Refers to 6 volt storage batteries that are often used for
trawler "house bank" power.

GCF = Gulf Coast Filter; A line of aftermarket lube, coolant, and fuel
filters that use rolls of paper towels or toilet paper as filter medium.

ICW = IntraCoastal Waterway

ISO = International Standards Organization; Sets standards for everything
from industrial oil viscosity to various manufacturing processes

K (as in 15K) = Thousand

K (as in K39) = Krogen

KK = Kady-Krogen

KW = Kilowatt

LOA = Length Over All

LOD = Length On Deck

LWL = Length, Water Line

MARPA = Mini Automatic Radar Plotting Aid

MT = Marine Trader; A line of Taiwanese trawlers.

M/V = Motor Vessel

RCI = A line of fuel filters that use centrifugal force rather than filter
elements.

RF = Radio Frequency; Usually used in the context of electronic equipment
interference.

RLG = Resident Love Goddess; Originally coined by TWListee Paul Browne
because he didn't want to call his wife "The Admiral".

SAE = Society of Automotive Engineers; Standards organization for everything
from motor oil viscosity to bolt strength

SSB = Single Side Band; A long range marine radio.

S/V = Sailing Vessel

TANSTAAFL = There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch; See Boat Unit

TWBS&T (or just BST) = Trawler World Buy, Sell, & Trade list; A mailing list
set up expressly for the exchange of boat related goods and services.

TWL = Trawler World List; Well duh!

VHF = Very High Frequency; A (fairly) short range marine radio.

VNS = Visual Navigation Suite; Computer navigation software made by Nobeltec

VUP = Voyaging Under Power; Robert Beebe's seminal work on long distance
powerboating.

WOT = Wide Open Throttle

And that's as much of a list as I'm going to make.

Tried posting this earlier, but it didn't seem to go.  Sorry if it gets
double-posted...

I hear about all the maritime accidents and tragedies in the PNW and their
discussions on TWL.  Thankfully, we don't seem to have many on the
Chesapeake, but they do occur.  I didn't see any mention of this on the
List, so I'll post the following link... it happened a few days ago.
