A note of caution on the I-pad.  Today I was just about to buy one of those
things because I think that they could make a very good nav tool in addition
to being a good web browser.  We talked to a commercial fisherman who loved
his.  However when I went to MSNBC to see some videos it didn't work.  The
salesman (I mean "genius consultant") said that it was because it doesn't
support flash videos "and it NEVER WILL!"  He then tried to make me feel like
only an idiot would want to watch videos on the MSNBC website.  Of course,
flash is not just on MSNBC, flash is currently the most popular video format I
believe.

I researched the flash issue and it turns out to be typical Apple "not
invented here" behavior.    They don't want you to be able to run flash
applications that compete with their propritary app store (propritary because
apple gets a cut of each app sold.)  It reminded me of everything that I
dislike about Apple, which is too bad because I was really willing to be
impressed.

(Disclosure, many years ago I worked for Microsoft among other companies but
will readily admit that they have issues, too.  Don't want to turn this into
a generalized bashing thread, just pointing out an issue that the geniuses
don't exactly highlight when you go into the store.)

Apples closed business model is why I do not own any Apple products.
The market will be flooded with iPad style Tablets by Christmas, many of
them will be junk, but those from Samsung/HP/Acer and other major
manufacturers should be pretty good options.
I just read this about a guys frustration in trying to watch a paid for
movie on his iPad, a lot of his issues had nothing to do with Apple,,
but their refusal to allow 3rd party apps was a contributing factor.
