Overall they are great engines that will run an easy 12,000 hours if you
take care of them. The top 3 on my list considering the age of the 120 are:
1. injector pump seals - look for a lot of diesel in the injector
pump oil when you change it.
2. leaking rear crankshaft seal
3. raw water pump - they are subject to fail but America Diesel has
an upgrade.
Also be careful of you transmission. Have the oil tested. Any sign of
moisture probably means the oil cooler leaked at some point. People often
try to flush them out and replace the cooler. There is no way to get all of
the moisture out without tearing the transmission down. Any residual
moisture will collect around the bearings and eventually cause them to fail.
The problem is that if a bearing fails and damages the housing, with these
older transmissions some major parts are hard to find. If you have any
moisture you should pull the transmission, take to an authorized service
center, and ask them to replace the seals. They will tear it down in the
process and find any suspect bearings or other warn parts. Bob Smith at
American Diesel gave this advice twenty years ago and it ended up saving me
a transmission.
