I know that the predilection of the group is navigation by laptop and any of
the various nav programs discussed here in the past. However, I'm in the
market for a dedicated chartplotter for the flybridge, and am considering the
Garmin GPSMAP 3210. Any opinions, for or against? Thanks in advance.

I have twin 5200 Garmins which are more or less the same with touch screens.
I love them.  In addition to being networked with the Garmin Radar and Sonar
It is also interfaced with my VHF radio with no problems.

As with any chart plotter, make sure you are also OK with the price
of the electronic chart modules, the cost to keep then up-to-date,
the ease and cost to exchange them for new region charts in case you
are voyaging, and verify that the charts exist for the region you
plan to cruise.

For example, I am in Europe and Garmin has no charts for the Black
Sea region, and they tell me they do not anticipate having any, if ever.

We had a Garmin 2010 for 6 years and liked it very much.  The only problem
was the hassle to make sure you have chips for each area you visit and the
unit processor was slow (slow to refresh maps etc).  We recently purchased a
Garmin 4210 and love it.  It has preloaded charts and a much faster
processor.  We use Coastal Explorer for trip planning and we are able to
load the routes and waypoints to the Garmin via an SD card.

I have had a Garmin 2006C for 7 years.  It's much like the 3210 only the
screen is smaller.  It's older and it's not as fast.  The 3210 also has
built in the newer g2 version of the Bluecharts for all of coastal US,
and is capable of networking with fishfinder, radar, XM satellite
weather, etc.

The 2006C is a terrific plotter - bright sharp screen, and super
intuitive and easy to use.  Others I've played with (and the much newer
Lowrance at my upper helm) are way clumsy and confusing in comparison.

If you can't find out what level the firmware is in the 3210 you're
considering (per the Garmin website v3.70 July 2009 is current) it might
be a good idea to call Garmin tech support at 800-800-1020 and see if
they still make available updates via a Bluechart chip.  For mine, I
order the update chip for $50, use it to update the internal SW, and
then send it back for a refund.

I bought a 4212--great purchase.  It's bright.  You acan barely see the PC
screens in the sunlight.  I highly recommend.
