It was good to meet Lisa who showed us a very good cell phone photo of an American Bittern that she had just seen close up at Carp Crossing. Weather: A pleasant morning on the Tower with a moderate to strong wind generally from the south. Haze limited visibility slightly during the morning, it was overcast with one slight clearance mid morning. The temperature hovered around 10c, rising slightly in the afternoon. Spots of rain appeared early afternoon under glowering skies. Raptor Observations: Our first big Golden Eagle day with nine sighted, mostly in the morning. Two settled in trees to the east of the Tower before moving west. Turkey Vultures (365) started ferry gliding down the shore in the morning, carrying on in fits and starts throughout the remainder of the day. Red-tailed Hawks (30) ploughed their own furrow today passing quickly by in singles. Sharp-shinned Hawks (15) appeared now and again. Northern Harriers (5) were mostly 'gray ghosts'. Two Cooper's Hawks and singles of American Goshawk, Merlin and Peregrine competed the tally. Non-raptor Observations: Pretty similar mix to previous days, but small birds were fewer around the Tower. There was a flyover of Red-breasted Mergansers (46), new for the season. Duck are increasing on the Marsh seemingly everywhere with significant numbers of Mallard (1420), Gadwall (880) and Ring-necked Duck (1120). It was good to see Bufflehead (5) with a bright male living up to his name.
