Wow, With NOAA providing free raster charts and continuing to produce ENC (vector) charts this is wonderful. This development is in my opinion the greatest advances in marine safety since the introduction of affordable radar. This is again in my opinion the best use of taxpayer money our government does. We mariners do not get a lot of direct benefit from the taxes we pay.
This totally changes the business model of those companies that publish cartography. I felt gouged by their pricing of something I basically paid for when NOAA surveyed the chart. and have to pay a premium to have them package it in a proprietary format. Now I can use up to date official charts. This is great.
Now I hope some start-up GPS manufacture brings out a model that allows me to directly use the NOAA charts.
