I was wondering if anyone else has ever seen this behavior -- I watched a raft of ring-necked ducks diving in the Nepaug Reservoir in Collinsville today and coming up with acorns. They had a hard time swallowing them whole... Has anyone every seen this? I'll post a couple of photos on FB.

A little investigation turned up that Ring-necked Ducks do not commonly eat acorns but it has been documented. They have the most diverse diet of the Ayathya ducks. They generally eat while underwater but bring up food to "process" - like removing the food from the shell with clams, snails, caddisflies. etc. Were they removing the little cap of the acorn before swallowing? I also found that in some areas, acorns make up almost the entire diet of Mallards and Wood Ducks in winter.
