"The confusion with some bridge tenders comes in because C.G. bridge rules do
require that radio & TV (not radar) antennas, bimini tops, fishing outriggers,
etc. must be lowered if that will let the boat under the bridge. Even if the
bimini is rigid, it must be modified to be lowerable. "
Hmm. This is most disturbing.
Morning Star has a mast which is rigged to lift our 15 HP dinghy outboard. It
is also the home for the anchor light. In order to lower the mast I must
first take down my large bimini top. It is a two person job so if just my
wife and I are aboard we must first find a place to anchor. Then we have to
take the bimini top down. This is about a ten minute job. We then need to
undo the boom and its rigging before I climb up onto the pilot house roof to
undo the forestay. Now we can lower the mast, tidy up and raise the anchor.
Once we get through the bridge I guess we will need to re-anchor and reverse
the whole process. The is a half-hour minimum, maybe longer. It would be
quicker and easier to wait for a sailboat to come along and then sneak through
on his coat tails! When we cruised the Erie Canal we just left the thing down
all the time, but we were never anchoring out at nite. I guess that I could
hang my hat on the fact that my anchor light is a required light.
This makes no sense at all!
