sound blankets

Anyone have experience using or making a sound blanket to cover their main
engine? I have a 6 cylinder Lehman (American Diesel) that I would like to
"quiet down" for long cruises. Of course I would vent the enclosure to allow
air-intake and would not expect to surround belts or pulleys.

Call Soundown (you can get their add by googling).  They have a wide variety
of products to quiet a boat.

We re-engined a 35' sportfish.    The engines almost touched the cabin floor
and were very loud.  We replaced the carpet padding over the engines with a
Soundown product which was a lead sheet suspended in foam.  Outrageously
expensive but produced an almost unbelievable reduction in noise.

I'm sure they will be helpful.

Richard,
We used 'Soundown 101'  (  http://www.soundown.com/S101.htm ),
which has a dense layer of malleable plastic suspended in foam with a
reinforced metallized surface on one side,  to line five sides (sides and
top) of the engine compartment. We used one layer on the sides and two
layers on the top.  I fastened it in place with contact cement and screws
with fender washers ( my substrate was wood)  I then covered the washers and
any seams with the matching tape that is included with the product. It is
easy to clean, light reflecting, and not expensive in the grand scheme of
things. Plus it is very! effective.  After years I am still awed when I
close the engine compartment hatch on the running engine and the sound
almost 'goes away'.
No connection with the company, just a very satisfied customer.
