This very issue really bugs me (lightly loaded generator for charging or coffee/tv/blender/microwave).  I am installing/upgrading my house battery/inverter system, but the challenge of recharging when on the hook (no propulsion engine use) for an extended anchorage (like this past weekend at Cape Lookout) is still there. I now use a small old 1000 watt gas portable Honda ($150 used) to run my 40 amp charger (~6 amps wide open at 120vac) and fridge (~200 watts).  Runs ~4 hours on .8 gals.  A little noisy, watch for CO, real peace of mind as backup.  If it falls overboard or dies, I will cry but not die!  I run the $10k 8kw when I cook on range, run A/C, make hot water, which is not often.

Downside?  I look like a blow-boater!!

Ideal would be a small, inexpensive, installed 1200 watt diesel 12vdc genset.  No charger loss and speed would match load. Note I said inexpensive. Air cooling would simplify greatly. Anybody know of a good one? I am thinking about developing one.

Regards, Jim
