Stephen, You will be happy to hear that we have been using Cetol, exclusively
on both our previous sailboat and our current trawler for several years now.
This includes a lot of time in the Caribbean sun. We do occasional touch ups
because of our own stupidity, with success and ease, and apply a maintenance
coat about once a year and that is pretty much all of the maintenance that has
been required. And we have LOTS of teak on both boats. Chuck

This is an early report only of the railing up to the sundeck; now on to the
flybridge stripe, ladder steps, gunwale,...

Hi all

Following many exchanges and discussions relating to Cetol on T&T I thought
that I would see if it is available in Europe.

I find that both Sikkens and International Paints have Cetol listed.

Sikkens has 12 different Cetol products listed - some available in 132
colours. I assume this is not what is generally referred to for exterior
brightwork.

So which brand / product do you use in the US?

Rodger, I just completed a small job on railing brightwork with Cetol and am
very satisfied with its application and initial appearance.  I used the
Sikkens Marine Natural Teak - 3 coats and their Marine Gloss for finish
protection - 3 coats.  My source was www.Defender.com.  They recommend use
of their Thinner no.216 for between coat prep - works well for me.  The
Sikkens web site is
http://www.yachtpaint.com/USA/hotlinks/sikkens_guide.pdf.  I talked to their
tech support; was helpful a couple of times.
Good Luck,
Stephen

The only suggestion that I have
Is that put on your 3 or 4 coats and finish with an additional coat of the
normal cetol thinned with Penetrol 25 to 30%
Leaves a nice glossy varnish like finish. Easy to touch up and much more
durable than varnish.

Hi Stephen and Rich
I have used Cetol for years..and love it--except the one occuring problem
that I encounter: When Cetol gets rubbed or nicked--it all comes off at that
spot, down to the bare wood. I have never heard of using Thinner no 216
between coats--what does it do and why use it?

Also what is Penetrol 25? I don't understand the use of applying "regular"
cetol on top of the natural coats. Wouldn't that give your wood that
"orangish cast" soo familiar with "regular/original" cetol?

At one time I did use cetol top coat but found it challenging to remove when
I needed to strip back down to bare wood. However, I did not feel I got the
extra protection from rubs, bumps, and scrapes that I thought I would when I
applied the top coat.
Would like to hear, even off line how these procedures fare over months of
cruising and docking.

Thank you for your help as I would love to perfect my cetol use as I do
enjoy using the product
