Bob,

A lot of the commercial boat owners in the Northeast are apparently cheaper
than those in Florida. A number of tugs and towboats (pushers) that move the
oil and garbage barges in the New York/New Jersey area use latex paints. They
are a good deal less expensive than marine paints and readily available at
Home Depot and Lowes. A favorite combination for topsides and deck is a
quality primer coat, usually Zinsser 1-2-3, with a top coat of Behr
epoxy/acrylic water based garage floor paint. The garage floor paint is tough
as nails and resistant to chemicals and oils. No telling what is in those
garbage barges.

I've seen some of the results and they're not half bad. The primer is very
adhesive and sticks to almost any sound surface, even galvanized zinc. The
garage floor paint is available in a wide range of mostly dull colors and
dries to a non-slip satan sheen. I wouldn't use it on a prestige yacht but if
you don't mind looking like a garbage scow it does the job. Judging by what
goes on in the nearby commercial boat yard, the tugs seem to be repainted on
a three or four year cycle or when they get really, really dirty.
Whichever comes first.

with a top coat of Behr

epoxy/acrylic water based garage floor paint. The garage floor paint is

tough

as nails and resistant to chemicals and oils.

I used the Behr Garage Floor Paint to paint the interior of the

Buccaneer that is being prepared for the Ohio - the interior was  formerly
covered with carpet - which was a real mess .

No primer was applied to the FG whch was washed with a degreaser before

the application of the paint .. Wow  it is covers really well , is easy to
use and is tough as nails .. it will never be up to a yacht gloss - but for
a workboat - I agree -  I woud use it in a minute ..
