Hi Guys
Yard is balking at putting in keel coolers. Would like me to add coolers to
engines. I ordered engines set up for keel cooling.
Yard says piping will take up to much space and the added cost would out way
the benifits of keel cooling.
engines are 700hp each and two gen sets. All set up for keel cooling.
Give me your thoughts on keel cooling is it great or a waste of money????

Hi John,

At the risk of being a smart ass, the answer to your question is "yes".

I'm no authority on the matter but I've always thought of keel cooling and
dry exhaust as being two sides of the same coin. The idea is to eliminate as
many holes in the hull as possible and to minimize your dependence on raw
water with all its potential problems. That can be accomplished by using
both keel cooling and dry exhaust but using only one of the two doesn't
work. Since raw water cooling and wet exhaust cooling normally use the same
water you've got to eliminate both systems to realize the benefit.

Which brings me to the point of your boat. I visited your fine web site last
night and came away with the impression that your boat has wet exhaust. As
such keel cooling probably won't benefit you nearly as much as it could. On
balance I've got to agree with the yard.

OTOH: If I misread your web site and you DO have dry exhaust, then you
should have keel cooling.

Exhaustively yours,

Alex
