I think Brian Smyth hit the nail on the head: build a high speed fuel filter
system (aka "fuel polishing") and then send some of that to a small day tank
for immediate use, with the balance back to the larger tanks. From the day
tank to the engine is a small, simple, final filter system. No duplication
of plumbing or filters or pumps. Day tank fuel as almost no time to go bad.
What always bothered me about Steve D's system was the complete duplication
required: one complete fuel filter system to the engine and one complete
fuel polishing system. Of course, Steve was talking in terms of retrofits to
existing systems and it makes no sense to rip out a functioning fuel filter
system to the engine; Brian is starting from scratch.
Brian's system seems to be a step ahead: performs all the functions of dual
systems for less initial cost and (I think) less maintenance, is suitable
for all hulls, regardless of length of journey or age of crew.
What else could we discuss that gets it all done for less?
