From Daisy Echevarria:
01/09/14 - New London, Fort Trumbull State Park -- 11:30 AM to 1:45
PM; unable to find the Pacific Loon. 6-7 LESSER SCAUP.
From Bill Batsford:
01/09/14 - New London, Fort Trumbull State Park -- Pacific Loon seen
at about 12:30. Distant view with scope necessary. Loon was at least
3/4 way across the river in front of Electric Boat. Also Lesser
Scaup.
From Timothy L Thompson:
01/09/14 - Groton, Thames River, as viewed from the EB docks -- 4:20
to 4:40 PM (sunset); Pacific Loon was spotted about 100 yds on the
east side of green buoy can #11 just across and north of Fort
Trumbull. Loon was preening and gently gliding down river and
proceeded past green buoy can #9 and headed to Junk Island. Perhaps
the Loon may be using Junk Island as a roost (just my guess). Junk
Island is the larger, second island furthest south of Fort Trumbull
and better viewed from Burr's Marina area off of Pequot Ave in New
London. The Loon has been favoring the protected waterways inside
EB's graving docks. But, as previously mentioned, these waterways are
frozen over and preventing the Loon from feeding there. Today, the
Loon was feeding just outside on the eastern edge of the open water in
front of EB. In my estimation, tomorrow may offer a good chance to
see the loon from the New London side. When the Loon goes to feed
tomorrow morning, it may head upriver and feed between green buoy cans
#11 and #9 which can be seen from Fort Trumbull with a scope as
recommended by Mr Batsford. High tide tomorrow is at 4:56 AM and 5:16
PM. I will look again tomorrow from 11 to 11:30 AM. Also, if you
come, don't forget to look in between and around the Fort Trumbull
Marina. There are many wildfowl present in Bentley Creek and just
south of Fort Trumbull proper. The Thames is holding some good birds
right now. Good luck and good viewing to all who venture out.
From Jerry Struzik:
01/09/14 - Stratford, Long Beach -- 8:50 AM; nowy Owl perched on iced
rock in marsh near end of parking lot.
From Sophie Zyla:
01/09/14 - Stratford, Long Beach -- SNOWY OWL moved further left in
the marsh and ducked to the near side of a rock so blends and scope is
advised to find.
Sikorsky Airport -- Snowy Owl on the runway at the airport at end of
the parking lot past the GJ 11-29 signs.
(One or the other of these flew toward Short Beach.)
From Phil Asprelli:
01/09/14 - Southport -- around noon; Barnacle Goose reported by Frank
Mantlik yesterday was present among a flock of 200 Canada Geese. Good
looks from Harbor Rd. Did not locate the Cackling Goose.
From James Purcell:
01/09/14 - Southport -- viewed the Barnacle Goose from the
intersection of Harbor Rd and Rose Hill Rd in Southport. The bird was
in the creek but then it flew with most of the geese to the golf
course directly behind the main clubhouse of the country club of
Fairfield on Sasco Hill Rd. Also at least one definite Cackling Goose
with several other possible candidates.
From Alex Burdo:
01/09/14 - Fairfield -- The BARNACLE GOOSE continues in the vicinity
of the Fairfield Country Club. I was able to catch up with this bird
at dusk today, among a large flock of Canadas on the iced-over
Southport Harbor. I typically view the country club (and a good
portion of the harbor) from the intersection of Harbor Road and Rose
Hill Roads on the Southport side, which is where I viewed today's
goose flock from.
From Jack Swatt:
01/09/14 - East Haven, Brazos Rd -- The BARROWS GOLDENEYE drake and
HARLEQUIN DUCK female/juv were both present today.
From Stefan Martin:
01/09/14 - Stamford & Greenwich -- 3 PM; Snowy Owl viewed from the
entrance of Greenwich point, but bird was in Stamford just under the
high tide line on the rocks behind a private residence left of the
lighthouse. Also 1 Red-necked Grebe, a large group (30+) Snow
Buntings.
From Mike Warner:
01/09/14 - New Haven/West Haven, East Brown St -- 2:00 PM; 2 Redheads
spotted by Deb Allen, both birds together and seen well in scope at
fairly close range. From I-95, take exit 44 and make your way south
on First Ave as if heading toward Sandy Point. E. Brown Street is a
dead end on the left, in the residential section before the new sewage
plant.
From Paul Desjardins:
01/09/14 - Windsor, Windsor Landfill -- afternoon; first cycle Iceland
Gull.
