Wire rope?

When did this become a forum for comercial fishing captains; I
thought we were talking about anchor rodes for recreational boats.

I use wire on my recreational boat.  It rolls up nicely on a deck
mounted and drum.  I could not be happier with stuff.  With a bit of
nylon attached to a lineman's break for a snubber, it works just fine
and it will outlast me.

Best,

Steve

Come on, Henry; you must be pulling our legs.
This forum is about trawlers.
Trawlers are fishboats.
Do we reject good ideas just because they are normally used on
sailboats? or tugs? or tankers?
I hope we try to adapt the best notions from wherever they're
encountered.
Even floatplanes.

Tamarack has an un-named 110 pound cast iron anchor, 100 feet of 3/8
chain and 450 feet of 5/8 double braid on a deck mounted hydraulic
drum. I might well replace the braid with wire rope if the double
braid ever needs replacing during my ownership, mainly because I would
be able to wind about thee hundred additional feet with the wire rope.
By the way, she's now a recreational boat again and was converted from
a fishboat (trawler) (seiner) to a yacht seventy-seven years ago. All
the evidence available indicates that the anchor is original to the
boat. Eighty-one years of anchoring and the only recorded dragging
occurred in 1943. I expect there were some that went unrecorded.
Yes, most of the logs are either in hand or in government archives.

So: wire rope not a bad idea for recreational boats. Depends on ...
you name it.

P.S. I asked the previous owner if he'd ever thought about a second
anchor in the eighteen years he used the boat on the North BC coast.
His answer: why?

Forgive my ignorance in my thinking that just maybe I was
able to explain something for the list members.
In the future I will keep my mouth shut and stop giving my
comments as obviously they are not well received !!
I now understand that this list is like Passage Maker
Magazine in that us with inexpensive and small vessels do
not fit on this list.

No John, please don't stop posting. From someone who kinda can say that I've been in your place, just try to ignore the tenor of the posts.

It sounds like you have a lot to offer. Keep in mind that the ones that can appreciate what you have to offer, usually do not see the need to mention it, so you do not get to hear from them. There are probably more of them out there than you think. Please keep on posting.
