HP 5071A operating parameter trends

S
Stan
Sat, May 13, 2023 2:42 PM

I have been running my "new" 5071A for the past couple of days. I've been
watching the output of the status message and captured a few of them below.
The first capture was immediately after the 5071A locked after coming out of
standby.

Has anyone else been doing this? Are there particular trends I should be
aware of that might indicate the beginnings a problem? So far, my 5071A is
operating perfectly, with no errors on the log file.

Thanks,

Stan

Hi

Having spent a lot of time “watching” a 5071A …..

The status stuff is great and it does tell you a lot. Unfortunately, it does not really
tell you / alarm on everything that could possibly be wrong or go wrong. Our
experience was that you really need to track it against something else (at least
from time to time) to be sure all is well.

One example:

As the tube wears out, the short term stability degrades. At some point it may it
will go  past the spec limits. Typically it can do this without any obvious change
in the status ( and no alarms ….).

Beam current will give you some idea of what’s going on, but how much is “enough”
for this or that level of performance? Not at all clear. Still, it’s probably the one thing
I’d log on some sort of regular basis.

I usually keep mine in standby but happen to have powered it up about a
week ago.  When it's running I log all the params each minute into an
InfluxDB database.  Here's a screenshot of the Emult voltage which
stabilized at about 1912.

That's higher than either you or Tom reported.  I don't know whether the
absolute value is important, or the change in value over time.

Per Bob's note, I just looked at the beam current and it's been flat at
100 nA forever.

Hi;
I do not have data for you to compare, but have worked with many 5071A's in the past, and your numbers look very good. But number do not always tell the full story, every 5071A has a little different personality, and some run fine for many years even with suspect numbers like high E-Mult voltage approaching the 2550 limit.
The thing to watch for is changes in Gain and E-Mult among other readings rather than specific numbers. Also depending on your application and level of wealth you may what to keep the 5071A in standby mode. In my lab I diciplined my ULPN clean-up oscillators with a "state of the art" GPS rec as my day to day reference and diciplined with the 5071A when needed.
Depending on your 5071A manufacture date you may also want to replace about 30 tantalum capacitors. In latter units the values were changed to address the issue. You are welcome to contact me directly for information on the suspect caps.
Most importantly enjoy you amazing frequency standard.
Cheers;

Subject: [time-nuts] HP 5071A operating parameter trends

I have been running my "new" 5071A for the past couple of days. I've been
watching the output of the status message and captured a few of them below.
The first capture was immediately after the 5071A locked after coming out of
standby.

Has anyone else been doing this? Are there particular trends I should be
aware of that might indicate the beginnings a problem? So far, my 5071A is
operating perfectly, with no errors on the log file.

Thanks,

Stan
