I read somewhere that pirates used to wear an eye patch to main their dark

It works just fine. Every time I have to make my increasingly often visits to
the head in the middle of the night, I close one eye before turning on the
light. When I'm done, I turn off the light and open my closed eye. It is still
dark adapted enough to find my way back to the bed without bumping into the
furniture. Try it. It works.

I went to a low intensity red  "night light" because when I get up to make
my increasingly often visits to the head, I've discovered if I open my eyes
and "break the seal", its difficult to go back to sleep.  I just keep the
"seal" intact and squint enough to navigate, then immediately go back to
sleep.

                                      Regards....
