Re: T&T: Safe Lime/Calcium Deposit Removal

My aging holding tank and lines have a calcium deposit problem.

While some fellow boaters regularly put a cup of vinegar in their heads about
once a week, my deposits are so extensive that I don't think vinegar would
work.

Over many years of boating, I have treated my heads with a diluted solution of
muriatic acid, especially before having to dissemble them when replacing
valves, etc. You can very quickly see the deposits disappearing if you fill
the bowl with a pail of water and then add a cup of muriatic acid. It starts
bubbling immediately.

This leads to the question of using muriatic acid on a regular basis. Will it
work to break up the old deposits inside my holding tank? What concentration
should be used? What frequency of use is safe? I hesitate to use the acid
regularly as it might cause parts in the heads to disintegrate.

What do others use for solving the problem of lime deposits?  Of cleaning out
holding tanks?  Martin Veiner

While it would probably keep the tank very clean, I would think that a regular usage of Muratic Acid would kill the organisms that help keep the tank in proper balance.
