10/16 Stratford - Birding around town today yielded about 75 species, with these highlights:
- Long Beach: SHORT-EARED OWL, PINE SISKIN, 69 American Goldfinch (migrating flocks), 2 Nelson's Sparrows.
- Cove Place: late OVENBIRD (private yard).
- McKinney Refuge: Lincoln's Sparrow, 2 Purple Finch, 23 Yellow-rumped Warblers with another 45 at nearby 300 Long Beach Blvd.
- Access Rd near Cricket Car-hop: Black-billed Cuckoo.
- Stratford Point: 534 Brant (multiple migrating flocks). ***OF PARTICULAR NOTE: Corrie Folsom-O'Keefe saw an unidentified Vireo in the Cherry tree from her office window that might have been a Cassin's or a Bell's. She said it superficially resembled a Blue-headed Vireo in that it had a white-spectacled look, but the overall size was smaller, the head-to-back contrast was less, and it was quite yellow below. The bird was in view for only about 5 seconds, and it could not be relocated by Stefan Martin or me.
