Hello all,
We recently had some dead trees taken down which opened up an area of wood
edge to more sunlight. I would like to plant some native bird-friendly
shrubs such as highbush cranberry, dogwood, bayberry, chokeberry,
winterberry, etc. I don't want to spend much money or need full size
plants. Years ago I got a package of native shrubs from the state nursery,
something like 12 shrubs (about a foot tall) for $12. It was a fantastic
deal and I am looking for something similar. If anyone has any suggestions
it would be most appreciated.
As far as sightings go:
6 pine siskins yesterday, 1-2 has been the average although I had a brief
visit by a flock of 30 several weeks ago
1 fox sparrow remains from the 2 that have been visitors for the past week
or two
No evening grosbeaks yet

I would love to know the same thing when and if you find out anything.

The Connecticut Conservation Districts have plant and seedling sales. Currently, the Eastern Connecticut Conservation District's website is not working but there are other regional districts that offer similar sales. I think the Eastern one only sells evergreen seedlings and the rest are regular size plants. It is also nice to support local nurseries, but I don't recall ever seeing seedlings at them.
