Bob Smith says that it is common not to have an accurate dipstick read
and that you should try to figure out where your level should be.

This suggestion may be worthless but I'd like to share my experience. In
2002,
I installed a rebuilt Lehman 120 in my Marine Trader. For 4 years, I had
to
continuously clean up oil in the drip pan, coming off the crankshaft
behind
the flywheel.
The last time I changed oil, I carefully checked the dipstick after I
added
the new oil and filter, and ran the engine to get the lines and filter
filled
with oil. To my amazement, the dipstick indicated I was low 2 quarts.
Somehow, my engine had the wrong dipstick (from a 135???). I rescored
the
dipstick and solved my oil leak problem. FWIW. Martin Veiner
