"Any better ideas for indicating fuel level besides what appears to be just
white paint with a fine brush?"

Well, Greg, a long time ago in a far off land, I ran the fuel levels in all four
tanks down to negligible.  Then a crew of guys an I refilled the tanks in ten
gallon increments while I marked the tanks behind the sight tubes.  After the
levels reached the top of the sight gauges (several inches below the tank tops)
we continued filling clear up to the tanks' tops, keeping track of the amount of
fuel added after the level went out of sight in the tubes.  With a known tank
capacity in hand, I was then able to convert each 10-gallon mark into actual
remaining gallons in each tank.  I then got some stick-on numbers and applied
them to the tanks.  Been there twenty-plus years.
