....... Armada makes a "clone" to Cetol which,
according to Practical Sailor, does not give the orange tint and West
Marine sells a "generic" called"WoodPro" which I hae used with success
and doesn't have the orange tint either (could be made by Armada).

Armada also makes the BoatUS generic, TeakCoat, which I use in the satin
finish.  It does have some pigmentation, but it is of a brownish cast, and
with two coats of the satin is virtually un-noticeable.

If your boat is going to stay in these (relatively) high latitudes, then
DeksOlje will work fine. In 1971, a Dutch charter skipper I met
somewhere on the South Coast of England sang the praise of it and I
switched over from varnish. It held perfectly well, as he had stated,
whilst the boat was in Northern Europe. But when she crossed over to
Brazil in 1981, the DeksOlje went completely to pot...and it was hell to
remove the remainders. I then went back to varnish until the captain of
the French sail training ship "Belem" told me I was a stupid ass for not
knowing "Silvanol",  a Belgian product similar to the Dutch Cetol, which
he used extensively of his ship. Armada makes a "clone" to Cetol which,
according to Practical Sailor, does not give the orange tint and West

Local Pittsburg Paints sells something (Armada or Cetol) in different
tints and textures for about half the price of the "Marine" product.
Been using it for years...

Actually, many of these European paint firms make various "wood
imprregnation products" in vrious tints (oak, meranti, teak) to suit the
various woods used in the home building industry. When I reported the
comments of the Belems captain to the CEO of Trimetal paints (the
manufacturer of "Silvanol") he exclaimed: "On a ship ? This product was
developed for window frames and doors !"
