Hello All
There were a few posts a while back that addressed some problems with top
coat adhesion over CPES epoxy. If you go up on there web site you will see a
product called Multiprime. This stuff is exactly the same as CPES just re named
to address a different market for those wishing to use it as a primer instead
of a rot restoration and repair. More importantly the application
instructions regarding top coat application are different.
On the Multiprime they recommend the topcoat be applied after the solvents
have evaporated but before the epoxy cures. This will chemically link the
topcoat to the epoxy ( a common practice with commercial epoxy coatings) The
application instructions for the CPES call for a complete cure before applying
top coats or fillers. That's probably because in rot restoration the CPES
penetrates much deeper into the deteriated wood and much more time is needed for
the solvents to evaporate.
So it would appear to me that one or more coats of CPES left on just long
enough for the solvents to evaporate followed by the first of the top coats
will promote better adhesion. You wouldn't be able to sand the CPES you would
have to begin sanding after the first topcoat.
