This is going to sound lame, but I am having a heck of a time finding an oil
leak on my 120 Lehman/34Chb. As you know, the bilge container slopes to the
bow and that is where the oil collects in the box under the motor. I have
lined the box with paper towels, abosorbtion mats etc. and cannot find the
drip line. It seems to only leak when run for several hours, not one or two.
I thought the front main seal may be the culprit, but have ruled that out.
Also, I do not believe it is the valve cover or any of the cooling lines. It
will drop a quart in 20 hours, so it is worth the concern. Any tips you have
to find the culprit would be appreciated. How about an oil dye or something
to make the source more identifiable? Thanks Tom
A couple of places to check are the seals around the injectors - if they
leak, the oil may run along the head gasket before dripping; also the gasket
where the lift pump attaches to the block.

Several years ago I bought a new Chevy truck that developed an oil leak, The mechanics added some sort of dye to the oil, told me to drive it for a week, then come back. If I remember correctly, they used a black light to then find the origin of the leak. The dye evidently showed up very well under the black light. They also said the dye was harmless and there was no reason to change the oil until the normal interval. Maybe you can get the dye from a Chevy dealer.

If you use a hose attached to the oil pan for easier oil changes, check all
the fittings between the end of the hose and attachment at the oil pan.

Tom I don't know if you have had your oil leak problem answered yet but; go
to a parts store and get a bottle of dye that is used in conjunction with a
blacklight. They have it for cooling systems, crankcase, a/c etc. After
you run the engine for a while, under power or whatever conditions generally
cause the leak, use the black light to find the leak. I understand that you
can even get a blacklight flash light now to save some expense. I have used
the blacklight/dye method in the repair business for years and it saves
lotsa guessing. The leak will be very evident. Once used it in a cooling
system for an intermittent leak that turned out to be at a water pump shaft
seal. The whole engine room glowed caused by mist from the pulley - but
there was a clear trail (bright yellow) from below the weep hole. This is a
great tool, works for a/c systems as well.
