Scott B.

In Feb. '08 myself, wife and a friend left Roatan and sailed Grey Pearl
N6208 to Panama.

The route and stop we made was  approved by my insurance company. You may
want to check your intended route with your insurance company. they are
skittish about Central America, with some justification.

This is the route we took:

  1. Roatan to 15 44.9N 083 22.39W, just south of Cayo Vivarillo, Honduras
(no stop permitted by insurance company)

  2. Turn SE and make for Isla Providencia at 13 23.9N 081 23.75W, great
stop -  this is a fantastic island in our view, and far preferable to Isla
San Andres which I have not been to, but was denigrated by all that we met
along the way, and even disparaged by the guidebooks.  This leg takes you
through the Bank Miskito and other small islands with lots of night time
unlit traffic and some light aircraft overhead. During the days we saw USAF
E-3 AWAC planes, that flew low, scoped us out, and wing dipped after they
saw the flag.  The route runs as close as 20 miles to Nicaragua which
thought was far enough off, but we still kept a sharp eye.

  3. Leave Providencia and make for Panama Canal at 9 30.4N 079 57.53W

Hope this helps with your route planning.

Best,

Braun Jones
