Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsWe have friends who have recently come back up the ICW from Marathon to
Baltimore and they tell a horror story about the disastrous "repairs" they
had done to their transmission while in Charleston. They found a "mechanic"
from an apparently reputable outfit who worked on, tested, and tweaked their
transmission. Turns out after he got through with them and they went on, the
whole thing failed completely, and they needed a whole new transmission,
housing, and more. The final disaster was apparently clearly identified as
the fault of this "mechanic," and while they hope to somehow recoup their
losses through warrantee on the work, their last weeks have been miserable
and incredibly expensive.
Here's the question. What do we do when we're out there and at the mercy of
the yellow pages, so to speak. How do we find a reputable repair operation
for whatever ails our vessel? It's hard enough to find someone locally that
we can trust to know what to do at a reasonable cost and in a timely manner.
What if you're hundreds of miles from home, or have left "home" for good and
are traveling on it for the duration?
Thanks for all input,

Although not always easy to do, one suggestion could be to consult the list.
Maybe make a phone call to someone with easy access to a computer and post your
situation to the board. I know for myself if I hear a list member is my area ,
I am open for any kind of help I might be able to give.
