For the first time since we installed it going on three years ago, the
generator kicked on last night at about 10:30.  However, it only ran for
a minute or so before returning to mains.

I didn't notice power actually going out in the house, though.  But the
internet dropped for a couple of minutes and as soon as it came back I
got emails from the two HVAC systems telling me that they'd lost comms
with the outside units

I also got an email from Spectrum saying they'd detected an internet
service outage at our address.  I don't know if that was triggered by my
modem going off-line or if there was a larger outage.  At the moment the
UPS is off-line (needs batteries; easier said than replaced) so the
modem would have dropped with any power flicker.

I drove down to the bagel place near MCL at about 9:00 this morning and
power was still out in the whole shopping center, as well as the stop
lights on Far Hills at David and Shroyer.

When I drove through there last night all was dark but the traffic lights
were on. Big red light on the controller box. I assume that indicated a
failure. They must have battery backup in those boxes. No wonder they are
so large. I wondered how long the backup power would last.  Apparently not
long enough.

It's probably a whole lot longer now that they use LED lights.  They had
temorary stop signs mounted on low sawhorses at the intersections -- not
all that easy to see in the rain.
