Electric Winch

Hi All,

I'm finally back on-line with a new computer.  300 MHz.  I can now make
mistakes faster then ever before.

Hundreds of unread letters.  I hope no one said anything worthwhile while I
was gone.  Did you?  I sure wouldn't want to miss anything important.

The reason for this note is that I would like to consider adding an AC
electric winch under my K39 boom (when ever I get it ((delivery slipped 2
months to Dec)) ) so that I can winch my dinghy up and down from the top
deck in style.  Does anyone have any recommendations?  The reason for
wanting AC is to avoid having to install a battery on the top deck or else
using very heavy electrical cables to supply the 100 Amps or so of current
required.  If I use 120 V AC instead of 12 V DC, the current load will be
only 10 Amps for which I could run moderate size cable from my main battery
bank and avoid a battery on the top deck.  Of course the winch would be
exposed to the elements and, therefore, needs to be designed for an outdoor
marine environment.  The hard bottom Avon and motor will weigh about 300
pounds.  The hoist cable length should be about 30 feet.

Does anyone know of a source for this type of motor?  Does anyone have any
experience with one?  Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Nick

Nick, FYI the Litton I just purchased has a small anchor windless mounted
under the boom for the same purpose.  The used a small Powerwinch which
doesn't draw much power and wouldn't need a separate battery.  If the load
is modest, in this case a 4:1 tackle lifting a 300 lb dinghy decent cables
are adequate.

AC can be deadly on the deck of a boat. Look into hydraulics. There are
complete rigs offered in large fishing supply houses. Then you could
move up to a hydraulic anchor winch.
But if you can find a safe system please let us know. 12v dc is a crude
and costly solution to the problem of transmitting power. The only thing
I am using  12v for is lights, small pumps and electronics, every thing
else is either direct drive, hydraulic or 120ac.
