I'll have to second that. I have heard nothing but bad about them from their
users.

How important does a person have to be before they are considered
assassinated instead of just murdered?

You must be hearing A LOT of bad.
The Motorola RAZR is the number 1 selling mobile phone in the US for 2006.

Motorola sold about 50,000,000 phones in 2006, many (most?) of them being
RAZR's.
I have a RAZR V3X (mainly a European version) in my collection. It is a
very nice phone. It works exceptionally well - has two cameras (one
pointing out like a normal mobile phone camera and one pointing in for video
conferencing). It has a 2 megapixel main camera and takes great pictures.
In benchmark tests it runs faster than my Treo 650 in almost every test. I
paid about $160 for my RAZR, unlocked.

As a trafficker in these things, we have sold many many thousands of
them. Return rates, which we are very sensitive to, are no worse than
typical (there are many versions of this piece). Of course, when there
are so many in distribution, typical defect rates will add up to a lot
in raw numbers.
Jeff, sounds like you picked up one of the units I referred to earlier.
There is a huge grey market in these things (I admit, we participate to
a small extent, but our market is a very light shade of grey, an
off-white really). It is the stuff that comes in from the third world
that is not FCC approved that is a real PITA for the carriers
especially, but also for resellers trying to compete on a level playing
field, as the less refined radios cost significantly less. Not to
mention the suspect "supply chain" involved.
