Interesting evening yesterday. Hail storm came through where we were anchored. Heavy rain, thunder and only a little bit of lightning with 1/4" stones. 70 knot gusts reported, though I doubt the gusts exceeded 50 knots where we were anchored, though Jill thinks that the gusts weren't under 180. No record for us as one year in Charleston we had 3/4" stones for about 1/2 hour. Times like that make us glad that we have a roof over our heads.

We got pounded by the same storm that shattered the Dauphin Island sailing
regatta yesterday afternoon, and I wonder if Rudy and Jill experienced was
associated with our 5 PM CDT storm. Luckily for Jim and us, our two boats
were safely inside the Palafox Street Marina breakwater in downtown
Pensacola. Two nights previously we had been anchored on the eastern edge
of Mobile Bay on a proposed trip toward Biloxi, BUT we decided the weather
was not conducive to wandering out into Mobile Bay and the Mississippi Sound
and elected to retreat eastward to safer harbor. I was thus puzzled to hear
that a major sized sailing regatta was upon the waters of Mobile Bay.

After reading the reports on the deaths and injured I was amazed that the regatta hadn't been cancelled prior to boats entering the bay. Someone, no All of them should have understood the danger that these predicted storms presented. Absolute negligence!

According to the papers and TV interviews available online, it is
apparent that no one checked the weather forecast or took such an
elemental precaution as looking at weather radar (there were several
comments to the effect that the weather was great when it started),
otherwise the event would have been cancelled. But you know how these
club regattas aren't something to be cancelled at the last minute; after
all, everyone was there ready to sail! Sounds like gross negligence to me!
