Starting Sequence Wednesday Nights

To All –

Might I suggest that, due to dwindling numbers, the Cruising Fleet Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker divisions start together on the first start, the Open Fleet/One-Design keel boats start in the second start, and everyone else, e.g. Lasers, Lightnings, Thistles, etc., start third. PHRF ratings should not be a factor since there are PHRF ratings for everyone today, including Lasers, Lightnings, and Thistles.

I find it interesting that historically the Wednesday Night starting divisions were listed in the Sailing Instructions as Spinnaker/Non-spinnaker/Open Fleet until someone changed the SIs in 2017 to Spinnaker/Non-spinnaker/Open. Dropping the word Fleet has allowed wide interpretation of which boats should be starting in that division.

In the meantime, if we keep the current starting procedures then any Non-spinnaker Cruising Fleet member who joins the Open Fleet can compete for racing awards in both Fleets. That’s a pretty cool way to beef up the coffers of the Open Fleet! Go for it guys.

Lee

PS Osman is right on all counts. Let’s do a better job of educating the Race Committee re Wednesday Night racing procedures. The last thing we need on the starting line is mass confusion. A pre-race meeting on the patio with the Race Committee might go a long way.

Subject: [Cruisingfleet] More NBC PHRF Racing -- Wednesdays and Sundays

Calling All NBC Cruising Fleet and PHRF Racers (and Friends):

This week inaugurates our 2020 PHRF Racing Series with the first Wednesday Night Series Race on June 24th (Sailing Instructions https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mxL_tmKYVeqTLeLtTt_m77ZMfVlYU8Zy/view?usp=sharing ).  Sunday racing starts July 5, with two events, Shattemuc's Pedlow Cup in the morning (10:30 a.m.), and our first Cruising Fleet Sunday Summer Short Series race that afternoon (1:30 p.m.).

(Note, the Club is in the process of adopting additional rules and requirements for all NBC-hosted racing this season, including a liability waiver required of all racing participants to protect the Club.  Look for information from the Club on the specific rules and process for compliance.)

Hope to see you on the race course!  Send questions and comments.  -- Tony Martin, Cruising Fleet Scoring

Wednesday Night Series (starts June 24, 6:30 p.m.)    6/24 Forecast: 9+kts SW, mid-80sF, mostly cloudy, low tide 8:25 p.m. , sunset 8:30 p.m.

Everyone knows this series.  For 2020, the Cruising Fleet and Open Fleet are co-sponsoring the series.  Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker.  We had eight boats practicing last week, and expect to see 10 or more for the 2020 Series inaugural race.  (Racing RSVP https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vCJDPFq9XnLp1dY8F4UwUKFOccMt_rATW8ATxR8k2UQ/edit?usp=sharing  -- see who's racing, who needs a 2020 PHRF, including you.  NBC Crew List https://www.nyackboatclub.org/crew-list  if you need crew.)

Pedlow Cup -- Shattemuc (starts July 5, 10:30 a.m.)

The purpose of Shattemuc's Pedlow Cup series is to encourage sailors who don't usually race, or crew who don't usually skipper, to come out for a fun morning of racing in a single Non -Spinnaker division (read about the Pedlow Ideal http://www.shattemucyc.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/PedlowIdeal2019-.pdf ).  Eligible participants are Shattemuc members and NBC members, special award for best performance by a non-Shattemuc participant.  Usually consists of races on the three Sundays of Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day, so far July 5 (Independence Day) is on the schedule.  Last year, we had several NBC boats cruise to Shattemuc on Saturday night, breakfast at the dock, and then join the Pedlow start at 10:30 a.m., with several dashing down river for the NBC Sunday start.  (PEDLOW CUP NoR/SI https://www.shattemucyc.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Pedlow-2020-NOR-SI-Final-.pdf ).

Sunday Summer Short Series (starts July 5, 1:30 p.m.)

Based on member  feedback, and the further challenges of the 2020 season, we've reduced the Sunday racing series to five (5) Sundays in July and August.  Members told us that a series that required committing most Sunday afternoons was too much -- tough to find crew (especially if also racing Wednesdays), or that Sundays were also for family sailing, social sailing with friends, and cruising.  Although the RC will have a PHRF start every Sunday at 1:30 p.m. (anyone can come race for fun on any Sunday), members who want to compete in the series need only commit every other Sunday afternoon in July and August, starting with July 5th.  (Note, we have a minimum of two throw out races; we expect to get two races in each Sunday, so no penalty for missing a Sunday). A great opportunity to race with family, try out new crew, try a new skipper, race short-handed, etc.

A great opportunity to race with family, try out new crew, try a new skipper, race short-handed, etc.      2020 Cruising Fleet Scoring Rule and Series Summary Here are all eight pages of the 2020 Cruising Fleet Scoring Rules.  In the meantime, here's a chart summarizing what most racers (and would-be racers) need to know.  In all series, the boat is scored, not the skipper, so your skipper may vary from race to race.  |   | Requirements to Race | Requirements to Compete in the Series | Divisions/Scoring | Dates | | Wednesday Night Series | 2020 HRYRA PHRF and NBC Member or Guest | Cruising Fleet Member or Open Fleet Member | 1) Spinnaker 2) Non-Spinnaker Low scoring | Every Wednesday from June 24 through Sept 23.  Sept 2 race will not count (Pursuit Race).  | | Sunday Summer Short Series | 2020 HRYRA PHRF and NBC Member or Guest | Cruising Fleet Member | Non-Spinnaker only (may add Spinnaker division if there's interest) Low Scoring | Five (5) Sundays, every other Sunday in July and August: July 5, July 19, Aug 2, Aug 16, Aug 30.  | | Cruising Fleet Champion | See 2020 CF Scoring | NBC Member and Cruising Fleet Member | No divisions - one champ!
