Highlights of reports received January 3 through January 10
from the Niagara Frontier Region include TOWNSEND'S
SOLITAIRE, SANDHILL CRANE, LAUGHING GULL, CALIFORNIA GULL
and AMERICAN PIPIT.
The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE first reported in early December
continues to be found sporadically at Bond Lake Park in
Lewiston. Most recent report was January 9. The bird has
been found along the dirt road or ski trail that runs south
off Dickersonville Road, just east of Blacknose Spring Road.
Also reported at Bond Lake Park this week - RED-BELLIED
WDPKRS., NORTHERN FLICKERS, 2 PILEATED WOODPECKERS and 11
PINE GROSBEAKS.
From the Town of Pomfret in Chautauqua County, the 12
SANDHILL CRANES found on January 1 on Farrell Road between
Route 20 and Berry Road, were reported again January 6 and
7.
A LAUGHING GULL continues at Dunkirk Harbor, on Lake Erie in
Chautauqua County. Most recent reports were January 6 and 7.
Other birds at warm water harbor - PIED-BILLED GREBE, HORNED
GREBE, 83 D.-CREST. CORMORANTS, GREAT BLUE HERON, BL.-CR.
NIGHT-HERON, GADWALL, CANVASBACK, 14 HOODED MERGANSERS, 2
RUDDY DUCKS, SHARP-SH. HAWK, 112 AMERICAN COOTS, GLAUCOUS
GULL and BELTED KINGFISHER.
On the Niagara River, a CALIFORNIA GULL was reported again
January 5 and 8, resting on the Robert Moses Power dam, as
seen from the Beck Overlook in Ontario. January 5, over 10
ICELAND GULLS at Beck, plus a GLAUCOUS GULL and several L.
BLACK-B. GULLS. Other single GLAUCOUS GULLS were noted at
the Whirlpool and in the falls gorge. Several LITTLE GULLS
above the falls and at Queenston. In the Dufferine Islands
park, 3 WOOD DUCKS, 2 NORTHERN PINTAILS, and nearby at the
gatehouse building, a GREEN-WINGED TEAL. On the upper
Niagara between Grand Island and Fort Erie, 130 TUNDRA
SWANS. And on Grand Island, 5 BALD EAGLES including one
adult at several locations along the West River Parkway,
including the newly designated "Eagle Overlook", which faces
Navy Island. Also, BALD EAGLE sightings at nearby Buckhorn
Island State Park.
January 4, in the Lake Ontario Plains, an unexpected
AMERICAN PIPIT was reported with a flock of HORNED LARKS at
the eastern boundary of the region, at Route 98 and Edgerton
Road in the Town of Elba. This may be the first January
record of AMERICAN PIPIT in the BOS archives. And, 9 PINE
GROSBEAKS continue along Route 18 at the power plant in
Somerset.
The monthly survey at Sinking Ponds in East Aurora reported
29 species including PIED-BILLED GREBE, 5 WOOD DUCKS,
NORTHERN PINTAIL, EASTERN SCREECH-OWL, NORTHERN FLICKER, 5
EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, SONG SPARROWS, SWAMP SPARROWS and a
WHITE-THR. SPARROW. And at a feeder in Elma, 20 species
included a first-time WHITE-W. CROSSBILL plus RED-BELLIED
WDPKR., HAIRY WOODPECKER, 2 PILEATED WOODPECKERS, TUFTED
TITMICE, 14 NORTHERN CARDINALS, RED-W. BLACKBIRD and 2
PURPLE FINCHES.
