Jospeh B's wife might have some pity on the night-singing Mockingbird: if I recall The Singing Life of Birds correctly, unmated males sing at night.

As good a theory the confusion-by-light one is I did think that this bird must be in panic mode and without a chick of his own. I pity the bird. My wife...not so much.
