Very nice FCC cellular coverage map

If you are in the market for a new cellular carrier, the FCC has just
published a very nice map that will allow you to compare the coverage, both
for LTE and voice for a given geographical area.

https://fcc.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html

The data come from the carriers, so they must be taken with a grain of
salt, but at least for Western Washington, T-Mobile is looking very good.

Best,

Steve

I had T-Mobile for 12 years and then I switched back to Verizon because I
got tired of dropped calls and dead zones, including dead zones inside Lacey
city limits.  My daughters still have T-Mobile and I can always tell when
they're getting close to their houses, because T-Mobile drops the calls and
they have to call me back.  T-Mobile drastically overstates their actual
coverage areas.  Verizon costs more but you get far better coverage.

I am sorry, I posted a link that magically did not include the controls for
displaying coverage.  This is the correct one:

https://fcc.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=6c1b2e73d9d749cdb7bc88a0d1bdd25b

Re T-Mobile, things have changed drastically in the past year or so.
T-Mobile is deploying the vast quantities of low frequency spectrum (band
71)  that was retrieved from UHF TV.  This travels quite far and is very
useful for us boaters.

Steve

Be very very careful when comparing T-Mobile data plans.  Kim and I were
persuaded to switch from Verizon to a T-Mobile family plan with lots of
data.  The T-Mobile salesman assured us we would be in good hands and save a
bundle and we would have great coverage in Alaska.  We signed up and
financed new phones and off we went.  We did not last a week in Alaska
without running out of data.  It turns out T-Mobile does not have towers in
lots of critical locations and they lease data coverage from other carriers.
When that happens, and without you knowing, the clock starts ticking on what
T-Mobile calls "Data Roaming."  Worst of all, when you run out of Data
Roaming (which we both did) you cannot purchase more data minutes.
None...zero...zip... until next month.

This is not just an Alaska problem.  Anywhere rural where T-Mobile does not
have towers can be a problem.

It took several calls and lots of repeating our needs to straighten things
out, not to mention a cash buyout of our phones in order to change carriers.
T-Mobile makes dealing with Comcast fun!
