Someone writing on eevblog has manufactured a replacement 53131 display
using LEDs. It directly replaces the VFD but requires an additional 5V
connection from the front panel pcb. Price is ~$100.

I've no connection etc. etc. but have one on order.

Very interesting in fact this device!

As owner of an old 53132A I would like to get one for replacement,
but there is no way at the moment to get it beeing located in Germany, a
pity!
It looks like only private persons can ship to Germany w/o problems ??

Arnold, DK2WT

The VFDs are notorious for fading after a few years.  More and more of these
display replacements are coming on line.  A few years ago, I replaced the
CRT in my HP 8920A communications analyzer with an LCD two color replacement
(there is no color function in the monochrome CRT, only grey shades.  It
brings new life to an old machine.  It was about $350, and although it took
a little work, it was not out of reach for a beginner.  The same guy is
doing other HP CRT replacements.

For the record: that LCD replacement Bob refers to is called NewScope. It is produced and sold by SimmConnlabs.  http://www.simmconnlabs.com/

I have one in my HP spectrum analyser and it works very nicely.

Ditto -- I upgraded our 8753D and 8591EM with NewScope LCDs and they work
perfectly and are a nice upgrade. Highly recommended.

I also worked with Simmconlab's principal towards developing an LCD
replacement for the SRS SR780 & SR785, but unfortunately that would have
required a new version of his FPGA-based controller because of the somewhat
unusual way that SRS did video in those units, and the effort ended there
:-(

I didn't see the 53132A on Simmonnlabs.com but I ordered the one listed on
eevblog and am pleased with the results.
