The steel industry certainly reflects an important indicator of the
American economy. Reports this week indicate that taconite shipments (aka
iron ore) on the Great Lakes is down by 67% over a year ago. Here in
Duluth, large ore freighters are tied up idle all around the harbor.
Moreover, the iron mines just north of here continue to lay off workers.
Twenty-eight lakers (Great Lakes freighters) are laid up across the
lakes. One port (Silver Bay, MN) which ships taconite (iron ore)
shipments exclusively is down 94% over a year ago.
While we don't have to contend with as many ships getting in our way, it
is an ominous indicator that this economy is still in deep trouble.
