I stopped by the large field on Rte 34 in Orange to sort through the
sparrows, but I didn't get very far. There was a solid hawk flight
going on that ended up grabbing my attention. Variety was amazing (by
hometown standards, anyway), and there was fairly steady action for
the time I was there.
10/13 - Orange, large field on Rte 34 -- adult GOLDEN EAGLE at 1:45pm.
Migrants from 11:00a-12:15p, 1:20p-2:40p:
Black Vulture 3 (+1 not migrating)
Turkey Vulture 7 (+several not migrating)
Osprey 7
Bald Eagle 2 (one adult, one imm.)
Northern Harrier 7 (+1 not migrating)
Sharp-shinned Hawk 32
Cooper's Hawk 12
Red-shouldered Hawk 1 (imm.)
Broad-winged Hawk 1 (imm.)
Red-tailed Hawk 2 (+several not migating)
GOLDEN EAGLE 1 (adult @ 1:45pm)
American Kestrel 8 (+3 not migrating)
Merlin 1
The view from this elevated field is great, especially to the north.
It could very well be a decent hawk-watch location on the better days.
