My old windless finally broke beyond the point of being coddled or repaired
and, of course, the manufacturer is long out of business. After removing the
old windless I am left with a 9 1/2 inch hole in the fore deck. The new
windless requires a 4 1/4 inch hole. Can anyone advise me how to plug the
old hole strongly enough to support the new windless?

How about a nice teak block and backing plate.
